Chamber Chatter

July 2008 Edition

Is there any place more beautiful? When the sun is shining and everyone you meet has a smile on their face and a little extra spring in their step; how could there be a better place to live?

That is the positive side. The negative side is we put too much of the onus for the beautiful surroundings on nature and we don’t give her enough help. Enter Elida Peers and her Communities In Bloom committee. They have been beating on doors in Sooke asking for personal and corporate involvement to give Mother Nature a hand in painting our scenery. Please take the time to sweep a little, weed a little and maybe plant an extra flower here and there to fill in those bare spots.

We have two winter projects that are being planned that should enhance next year’s vistas. In order to be truly considered community friendly, we wanted these projects to be green. Reduced reused recycled, remember. Well we would like to have either competitions or bees or both; we want to have some birdhouses and some planters built. It seems to only make sense if these items were made out of reclaimed lumber, specifically, cedar of any kind.  We thought the planters could be built with a nautical theme. They need to be large enough to be cumbersome to carry off once planted yet small enough not to be obtrusive on sidewalks or at doorways.

The birdhouses are free of restriction.

Bottom line:

Do we have someone to spearhead one or both of these fun projects? Volunteers?

Do we have anyone interested in donating their old cedar fence or whatever?

We have hopes of 50 plus of each planters and birdhouse. That is going to take a pile of lumber. If you know someone with lumber that could be recycled, please either contact them and tell them about the project or call me at 250-642-6112 and I will handle it.

If we could get these built over the winter we could install in time for nesting and planting and make an impact on our image and have a lot of fun doing it.

Finally and I do mean Finally!

Congratulations to the stakeholders and the rest of the committee members of the Community Tourism Foundations initiative for Sooke to Port Renfrew. A huge, time consuming and ever so important and necessary job has been completed. The final marketing plan will soon be released for implementation. Now all of Sooke must make certain that this plan is followed and funded for the coming years. There is no sense in even beginning if we are not prepared to follow it through for a minimum of five years. It should also, like the OCP, be revisited occasionally to keep it accurate and pertinent.

This document, if handled as should be, will benefit every man woman and child in Sooke now and for years to come. I could preach on this for pages but I will not use the ink and paper rather I will use noise pollution and speak to anyone individually that might want to ask me why I feel it is so important.

Thank you for your time and hopefully your attention. Talk with you next month

I wonder if DJ’s and broadcasters as group ever get that feeling: “Is There Anybody Out There”? That’s the feeling I got from last months column. I was speaking of the ideas of Birdhouses and Planters being made over the winter months and then installed and displayed around Sooke. As a beautification and nature benefit program. Suggesting that we could make a fun time out of building and judging the birdhouses and planters and using recycled lumber to build them, would also be environmentally friendly. I asked for volunteers to participate in building or spearheading the projects and for anyone with knowledge of where we might get some used cedar. Well I certainly didn’t need my senior matriculation to keep records of the calls to 250-642-6112 or faxes to 250 642-6127 or emails to info@sookeharbourchamber.com. The sum and total of calls, faxes and emails equaled zero. Nobody even called to say; “ what a dumb idea” “Hey, we’re way too busy” or “ We are totally volunteered out”.  Maybe someone will give me a call this month and tell me I’m off Base with these comments, I probably am but some of us felt that making Sooke more bird friendly and prettier seemed like a no-brainer, planning way ahead for the next Communities In Bloom. These are just more meanderings of a grumpy old man.

Oh by the way, I think I know why old men get grumpy. It’s because their mind and body fall out of sync. The mind thinks the body can do all that it used to and the body can’t understand how the mind can be so wrong.

Lets talk some Chamber here. Congratulations to everyone involved in the 2008 Edition of the Sooke Fine Arts Show. I had a visitor tell me how the show had totally exceeded their expectations and they would make certain everyone they knew would be so advised.

Again, congratulations on a great show for Sooke and area. A very big thank you also to the business community who contributed to the production of the program.

Mark your calendars for the third annual Sooke Sirens Spectacular Seafood Stravaganza luncheon, Saturday, August 23rd, 2008, held upstairs at the Sooke Legion. Lucille Barfield, “Treasure Chest” of the Red Hat Sooke Sirens advises that approximately 150 Red Hatters from the Island and Lower Mainland will want to browse and shop Sooke.

Now there is a good reason to go to City Hall, 2215 Otter Point Road. Over the years I’m sure that many of you have seen the photo of the older, obviously hard working, man holding the hose and wetting the freshly cast concrete pipes pictured down at Cooper’s Cove. Well he has now been virtually brought to life in a fountain display at City Hall. The Heritage Monument and Exhibit, commissioned by the District of Sooke Spirit of BC 150 Community Committee, stands proudly on the Municipal Grounds and is further enhanced with water running from the hose. This again is from the auspices and the hard work of the Sooke Region Historical Society and the District of Sooke Spirit of BC 150 Community Committee. The unveiling took place after the arrival of Relay Runners and Vintage Vehicles coming to the ceremonies from Port Renfrew and marking the 50th Anniversary of the Sooke to Port Renfrew road. Those of you who were unable to attend the unveiling on Monday August 4th take a look. By the by, if you and/or your neighborhood have space and would like to adopt and care for some of these flow line planters give Elida Peers a call @ 250-642-6351 for details. If you would like to see more planters already installed you can check out the front of the Museum, 2070 Phillips Road and in front of Sooke Home Hardware 6626 Sooke Road.

May I have your attention please, all chamber members!. Please prepare a photo and two hundred word (approx) biography of your business for placement on the Internet. The Sooke Harbour Chamber of Commerce website is currently being remodeled. When completed at the end of this month (August), it will have the capability of hosting a photo and proper description of your business outlining what it is that makes you unique and what it is you specialize in. The intention is that you will have an electronic brochure available to be seen by everyone that goes to the Sooke Harbour Chamber site. The space is provided to all members as part of their benefit package and is included in the Annual Membership Investment.

It is believed that this initiative will aid us with our shop local program and give us an advantageous position on the Internet in what information we are capable of provided the users.

Please welcome Jason Kahl of Kahl Realty & Property Management as our new member for July. Kahl Realty can be found at #107 - 847 Goldstream Avenue, Victoria BC. 250-391-8484 and at jkahl@shaw.ca as well as www.kahlrealty.com. Welcome Jason.

I wonder with all the inclement weather we have experienced this summer, if you may have noticed the foghorn is always blowing at the same time. Maywell Wickheim of Sooke Marine and Ivan Bjornholt of Capital Computers got together and have installed a loudspeaker device that makes the sound of a fog horn three times each day at 12:00 noon. The sound adds to the charm of the surroundings of the Museum and Lighthouse. Paying attention to the little details always makes a difference. Did you know that one day next year the one-millionth guest will walk through the door of the Information Centre/Museum? Impressive!
